FileMaker Pro 13 Help. You can format layout objects to change automatically when they meet specified conditions. For example, you can use conditional formatting to automatically display balances that are over 30 days past due in bold, red text. Conditional formatting settings affect only the way data is displayed or printed, not how data is stored in the database. In Layout mode , select one or more objects.
For more information, see Selecting objects. In the Conditional Formatting dialog box, click Add to define a new condition. Specify the condition for formatting data in the selected objects. To specify a format based on common conditions, for Condition choose Value is. Then choose one of the following conditions and set the parameters. Data that falls between and includes the values specified.
Data that does not fall between and does not include the values specified. Data that is greater than or equal to the values specified. Data that is less than or equal to the values specified. Date data more than the specified number of days in the past. Date data more than the specified number of days in the future. Date data less than the specified number of days in the past, including the current day and any future days.
See notes below. Date data less than the specified number of days in the future, including the current day and any past days. Moving, disabling, enabling, and deleting conditional format settings changes the order in which conditional settings are applied to an object.
Double-click the condition, change settings, then click OK. Windows: Use the double arrow to drag the condition to a new location. Select the condition, then click Delete. You can set conditional formatting on the following layout objects: text, fields including fields from external ODBC data sources , merge fields, layout symbols date, time, page number, record number, and so on , buttons, button bars, web viewers, and tab panels and slide panels.
Conditional formatting is not available for non-textual objects such as a rectangular layout object or placeholder text. Conditional formatting can be set on single, multiple, and grouped layout objects. Note that your file must contain record data that meets the formatting criteria you have specified for conditional formatting to appear. When you set multiple formatting conditions on an object, all conditions are evaluated starting from the top of the list.
When you use the Value is option with the predefined conditions less than x days passed or less than x days ahead , the current date is included in the number of days you specify. Conditional formatting is ignored when the display state of an object is In Focus. See Specifying the display state for an object. Number and date format settings specified in the Data Formatting area of the Inspector are applied after conditional formatting settings and are therefore preserved, even if data meets your conditional formatting criteria.
However, sometimes number, date, and conditional format settings are combined. For example, if you set negative numbers to display in red and also set conditional formatting on the same field to display negative numbers in blue with the fill color yellow, the result will be a red number in a yellow field. System formats have no affect on conditional formatting settings. Conditional formatting settings are not transferred when records are copied within FileMaker Pro files or exported to other FileMaker Pro files.
Creating a layout. Selecting and working with objects on a layout. Oops, I guess I missed one – sort of. I consider buttons to be equivalent to text objects because they’re not fields, and you can use the define button settings to control their shape. A button isn’t “really” an object, but rather it’s a property of an object because you can arbitrarily assign it to a field, vector shape or text label and even to an image.
Hi Matt, I’ve a question about Conditional Formatting video. If conditional formatting can’t apply to object like rectangles, ovals, etc For example in the last example, in projects’ portal, what kind of control Do you use to apply conditional formatting in order to hide icons? Thanks, Anna. Is simply a matter of putting an overlay above what you want to hide. Yes, you use a transparent text label, with only a space character, above anything and then conditionally set the fill color to the same as the background.

This topic is days old. Please don’t post here. Open a new topic instead. I am working in FM Pro Advanced 9 and trying to conditionally highlight a record in list view when it is the active record.
I also have written a script that sets the global variable to the record ID of the active record. However, I cannot figure out how to trigger this script every time a record is active in the layout. Any recommendations? I know I’ll probably need to use a plugin, but which one should I use and since I’m not very familiar with how they work, can you also explain how to incorporate it into the database? Thanks in advance! The zippScript plugin was a favorite back in the day, but is sadly no longer available.
I don’t know that there are significant differences between the free options. What you will need is an unstored calculated field that includes the Get RecordNumber function, which should evaluate when you change records in the list, thus triggering your script.
The actual calc will depend on which plugin you use, but probably something like:. The plugin function would specify which script to run. Your script may also need a Refresh step Freeze may work instead of Refresh. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. Sign up for a new account in our community.

The children records have 2 fields: Profile Name and Process type. Our user would like to enter a new child record profile name and process type.
There is more bI want to start with this first. I see script triggers to the layout “OnRecordCommit”, but no similar script trigger for portals. Any ideas on how to handle this? Or am I going to have to add a button to go to another screen to accomplish this? I hope i gave enough info for you to help me.
Note: I also have script triggers attached to first and second field which runs on exiting the fields. I don’t think they affect anyways , but just mentioned to give idea.
Hello everyone I am currently working on a database, which HR-Managers can access via WebDirect using login-information, to accede or resign their employees.
I have made 6 possible option types for the HR-employees to enter data into, set by an unique ID, but with the use of the same fields. Sorry FileMaker.. Therefore I was thinking of making a script to each of the different fields, which needs validation, and is this even a good solution Question one; how do I do this, the most easily?
Is it possible? I have 8 required fields for validation, fields are global. I don’t want the scripts to interfere with the other option types X, Y, Z which each is set by an unique ID, as well as fields, although the fields used in these option types are from the same table.
Please see attached images of my setup. Hope you can help me, for the best possible solution. If you need more information, let me know. Purpose: To capture the contents of a field before it is changed. Compare the before to the after. Highlight the after and screen capture then export. I can’t get past the first sentence and it’s getting frustrating because it seems extremely simple. But I don’t want it hard coded.

Providing users of your database with every possible clue, indicating the status or state of things, is something you should seriously consider – every time you start to work in Layout mode. I must admit, I was personally a slow adopter of Conditional Formatting when it was introduced in FileMaker 9. It’s been a few years now, and there are a lot of things you can do with it.
